Abstract:

This study deals with the numerical modeling of symmetrical water entry of tunneled sections. In this study, firstly, the water entry problem of a wedge section without tunnel in four different deadrise angles was numerically modeled. The obtained results related to the pressure distribution on these sections and the maximum pressure have been compared with the experiment results. In the next step, the numerical simulation of the water entry problem with the tunnel section has been done. For this purpose, a tunneled section was created by adding a tunnel to a simple wedge section. Finally, the effects of changing the deadrise angle and also changing the radius of the tunnel section have been modeled. In this study, the viscous Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations are used to simulate water flow around the section and also a Volume of Fluid (VOF)-type method, is employed to capture the free surface. The results of pressure changes and maximum pressure in three different areas of the tunnel section have been obtained. These three areas include the area before the tunnel, in the tunnel area and the area after the tunnel. The results of this research indicate the occurrence of severe pressure changes in the tunnel area. Also, with the increase of the radius of the tunnel, it was observed that the amount of pressure on the section also increases. The results of this study can be used in the hydrodynamic analysis of tunneled vessels.

Numerical Simulation of Water Mist Suppression of Tunnel-fire Scenarios

Water-mist fire suppression systems offer a number of potential advantages over conventional sprinkler systems. A water-mist system uses very fine droplets of around 50μm diameter, which results in entirely different behaviour. In particular the water-mist remains suspended in air for long periods, and is influenced by the airflows caused by the fire and the general ventilation regime. In order...

Numerical Simulation of Water Entry of Different Arbitrary Bow Sections

Water impact phenomenon of general bow section is a critical event for planning hulls. In this paper, the water entry of several arbitrary bow sections is investigated. For this purpose, arbitrary bow shapes which are introduced by Lewis form approximation are considered. In order to obtain pressure distribution and free surface profile, volume of fluid (VOF) method coupled with finite volume m...

Numerical simulation of turbulent compressible flows in a C-D nozzle with different divergence angles

Compressible gas flow inside a convergent-divergent nozzle and its exhaust plume atdifferent nozzle pressure ratios (NPR) have been numerically studied with severalturbulence models. The numerical results reveal that, the SST k–ω model give the bestresults compared with other models in time and accuracy. The effect of changes in value ofdivergence half-angle (ε ) on the nozzle performance, thru...

A free boundary problem arising in a model for shallow water entry at small deadrise angles

The impact of a rigid body on liquid is an important free boundary problem with applications ranging in scale from asteroid impact to droplet motion. The severe nonlinearities involved mean that even the basic problem in which the liquid is inviscid and incompressible, the flow starts from rest and is therefore irrotational, and the effects of gravity, surface tension and air cushioning are neg...

simulation and experimental studies for prediction mineral scale formation in oil field during mixing of injection and formation water

abstract: mineral scaling in oil and gas production equipment is one of the most important problem that occurs while water injection and it has been recognized to be a major operational problem. the incompatibility between injected and formation waters may result in inorganic scale precipitation in the equipment and reservoir and then reduction of oil production rate and water injection rate. ...

A Low Cost Numerical Simulation of a Supersonic Wind-tunnel Design

In the present paper, a supersonic wind-tunnel is designed to maintain a flow with Mach number of 3 in a 30cm×30cm test section. An in-house CFD code is developed using the Roe scheme to simulate flow-field and detect location of normal shock in the supersonic wind-tunnel. In the Roe scheme, flow conditions at inner and outer sides of cell faces are determined using an upwind biased algorithm. ...
